Why touchscreen controls make or break a mobile game

September 3, 2026 · Lena Vogt

I've abandoned more mobile games over bad controls than over anything else. A brilliant idea means nothing if my thumb keeps covering the action or the inputs feel a half-second behind.

The best mobile controls are invisible. You stop thinking about them and just play. Neon Drift Circuit gets this right with its drift button placement, and even a simple game like Casinacho Win benefits from instant, reliable taps.

Common mistakes are easy to spot: buttons crammed near the screen edges, gestures that clash with the phone's own swipes, and menus that assume you have a mouse. Any of these can turn a fun game into a frustrating one.

If you're a developer reading this, my one plea is to test on a small phone with big thumbs. That's the reality most of us play in.
