What separates good RPG progression from a grind trap
Progression is the heartbeat of any RPG, and on mobile it's often where things go wrong. Too many games hide their fun behind a wall of repeated fights, hoping you'll get bored enough to skip past it. The good ones do the opposite.
The trick, in my experience, is meaningful choice. When leveling up lets me change how my character plays rather than just adding bigger numbers, I stay engaged. Ashen Covenant is a great example: every few levels I had a real decision about my party's direction.
Pacing matters just as much. A game that respects short sessions gives you a satisfying milestone every ten or fifteen minutes. When the rewards are spaced too far apart, the whole thing starts to feel like homework.
My advice when trying a new RPG: play for about two hours, then ask whether you're excited to level up or just watching a bar fill. That gut check tells you almost everything.
