Five signs a mobile game actually cares about its story

A good story can carry a mobile game further than any flashy combat system. But writing for phones is tricky, since players read in short bursts and drop in and out. The best games plan for that.

First sign: the opening doesn't waste your time. A strong intro sets a hook in the first ten minutes rather than burying you in tutorials. Second: characters remember your choices, even small ones. Nothing kills immersion faster than dialogue that ignores what you just did.

Third, and this is underrated, the writing sounds like people talking, not like exposition read aloud. Hollow Lantern nails this by letting the environment tell most of the story. Fourth: pacing that lets quiet moments breathe between the big beats.

The fifth sign only shows up at the end. A story that cares about itself sticks the landing instead of trailing off into a sequel tease. When all five line up, you've found something special.
